Meet Delray’s Greta Thunberg

The Power of One Person

The Media Monster needs stories, and individuals make better stories than groups, or even movements. So it has made Greta Thunberg the student face of climate change activism. A quick recap on this inspirational Swedish schoolgirl: in August 2018 Greta staged a protest outside the Swedish parliament holding a sign that read “Skolstrejk för klimatet” (School strike for the climate). Among her demands were that the Swedish government reduce carbon emissions per the Paris Agreement.

The ‘Greta Effect’ On Student Activism and Climate Change

This bold act sparked what has become a global movement of school students who take time off from class to participate in demonstrations, demanding action to prevent further global warming and climate change. Recently Greta came to the U.S., participated in school strikes last Friday and spoke at the UN Climate Summit in New York last Monday.

Meet Joneldina, a Greta of Delray Beach

But there are countless students the world over who are equally inspiring, equally passionate about this issue, including one WiseTriber named Joneldina (Dina) Bazou. With an idea that came out of our Sustainability Summer Camp, Dina wrote a play on climate change which aims to inspire collective responsibility for the planet. It will be performed in Delray on October 5th as part of Rise: A Climate & Art Weekend.

We are seeking your support in creating costumes and props for this production, and have a goal of $200 — any little bit you can contribute will help raise awareness about this all-important issue. Please click here to donate if you can.

We are so very inspired and excited to see young people across the globe taking a stand for climate action!
