Good question – and one we contemplate each summer.
The pavement is hot, yet the vibe is laid back and calming. It’s cool to be in Delray in the summer – there are places to explore and events to conquer for the most ardent fans of activity.
Nature & Nurture
One hidden treasure that combines nature and nurture is The Girls. Located behind a small strip center North of Atlantic Avenue, it’s behind the ice cream shop and pizza restaurant Bambini’s. The luscious foliage, waterfalls, petting zoo, exotic birds, mining stream and hydroponic farm make this utopia for young people, but also glorious for grown-ups.
The Girls recently expanded the zoo (and animal landscape) to include Hollywood-style lodging for baby goats, swans, baby pigs, donkeys, rescue turtles, bunnies and exotic birds that often say “hello” in their native tongue. It’s a joyous colorful kaleidoscope of Mother Nature’s finest creations.
A Slice of Heaven
If this natural habitat gives you a sugar craving, don’t waste the urge. Head over to Gramma’s Bakery a few doors down and experience the endorphin rush of homemade breads, cakes, pies, cookies and other baked goods. It’s as visual as it is inviting.
Goin’ Old School
If you’re looking for summer fun with a twist of nostalgia and wizardry, check out the The Silverball Museum. This homage to the boardwalks of New Jersey starts with arcade games (for grown-ups and kids) and moves on to Skee Ball, video games, a foosball table, Vintage Juke Box, air hockey, signed guitars from famous musicians and more. There is a quaint restaurant with delicious food and an amazing happy hour. A burger and fries is only $6. They also have pizzas, meatball sliders, nachos, chicken tenders and more.
Garden of Adventure
One of the eighth wonders of Delray is the illustrious Delray Beach Children’s Garden. It was created to nurture eco-consciousness in children, but it’s also for adults to luxuriate in Mother Nature’s finest greenery. It’s behind St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and has a Labyrinth, Rare and Tropical Fruit Trees, Fish and Turtle pond, Twig Tunnel, Banana Forest, Healing Garden, Interactive weather and solar power stations, Adventure Boat, Giant Storytelling Chair and a Simon Grass River Chickee Hut for classes, celebrations and gatherings. They also have an Eco-Kids Club every 3rd Sunday from 12:00 pm to 12:30 pm.
All Aboard
If the summer heat brings out your desire to hit the water, check out Delray Yacht Steel Drum Cruise. Every other Thursday they cruise down the intracoastal waterway pointing out all interesting homes and salient landmarks. The sunset will wave a magic wand over your being and the music will tickle your soul. It’s authentic and calming and has 105-feet to roam. The Lady Atlantic sparkles with goodness, and if you’re hungry, you’re in luck – there’s food and drinks.
Bliss Out
If you’re looking for calm and connection, head over to Casa Mannabliss. This heavenly Zen space offers adults and children classes and celebrations to bring out your Zen nature. There’s yoga, meditation tai chi, sound healing, breathwork and more. They also have workshops and events that herald the joyous nature of existence. You will walk out in an altered state, one that is steeped in sweetness and serenity. They also have an outdoor garden with fire pit, a garden and and if you’re lucky – music.
Ohm
Do you want to luxuriate in a Full Moon meditation healing session? Head over to Full Moon Manifesting Meditation that is held once a month on the full moon. Sunny does sound healing, guided meditation, stretching, spiritual guidance and healing in a pure lively space of light and love. This monthly event is for adults only.
Also check out the Sandoway Discovery Center for creative and interactive educational exhibits and programs. If you love birds and the exhilarating wonderment of nature check out the Wakodahatchee Bird Sanctuary on Jog Road, North of Lake Ida. It has a boardwalk that crosses water ponds and islands, and is home to 178 bird species, turtles, alligators, rabbits, fish, frogs and raccoons.
