Farm to Table and The Slow Food Movement: #GetDirtyInDelray

The food world is rapidly changing – words and phrases like #meatlessmondays and “going vegan” are starting to become viral thanks to platforms like Facebook and Instagram.

Everyone from Kim Kardashian to Jamie Oliver have hopped into the food conversation – offering tips, tricks and insights into helping their followers be happy and healthy.

A lot of your menu items have been affected as well – with new menu items, styles of cooking, and cultures being reflected in local restaurants across Florida and the southeastern United States.

The reason behind the trends?

The data proves it –  eating healthier leads to more fulfilled lives, better communities, and more opportunities (Source).

Sustainable Eating: Food, Science, Technology, and Healthcare

Sustainable eating is (Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics) a concept which has come to reflect the time.

Essentially, it’s about making food choices which affect people and planet, for the positive.

Technology has caught up in order to help out. Urban farmers – agriculturalists, horticulturists – food professionals responsible for growing and producing your food – are relying on technology in order to help make healthier, more nutritious foods.

Technology is enabling researchers to make new discoveries that are changing our understanding of nutrition (INC).

Big data, in particular, is revealing the consequences of certain foods that scientists did not previously understand (INC).

The FDA in recent years has been forced to issue updates on what we think is actually healthy. One of the biggest changes is the escalating war on sugar (INC).

Sustainable Diets are those diets with low environmental impacts that contribute to food and nutrition security and to healthy life for present and future generations (Harvard).

They’re protective and respectful of biodiversity and ecosystems, culturally acceptable, accessible, economically fair and affordable; nutritionally adequate, safe and healthy; while optimizing natural and human resources (Harvard).

#GetDirtyInDelray – A South Florida Sustainable Eating Movement

WiseTribe has joined the conversation.

Our mission: to help you learn more about food, all while empowering your friends, family and community.

Taking not so common knowledge – big ideas like “eat your vegetables” and making them small.

Let’s take it a step further.

Interested in getting involved and joining the movement?

It takes 30 seconds.

Just ask yourself –

“what are some simple things I can do to change

the way we think,

We produce and consume

Our food?”

Our #GetDirtyinDelray movement has capitalized on some of that success already.

A lot of the current food trends you’ve been seeing have come as we’ve gotten more educated about our food.

Modern advances in medicine have highlighted the vast health risks associated with the average American diet.

What we’ve found is that those people, communities, and populations who encourage a healthy mix of foods as part of their diets, typically tend to be healthier.

It’s hard to argue with the results – the correlation between lifestyle and long term health – is undeniable.

The food industry has been catching up – with everyone from McDonald’s to White Castle offering tasty treats that were vegan, plant-based, low fat, low calories, or more full of produce.

Changing attitudes has meant changing spending habits.

With everything from weight loss stories to local farm movements, the internet has meant that consumers like me and you have more information about new food trends than ever before.

Updated menu items like vegan burgers, tacos and pasta are the new normal.

Talk show hosts and influencers are bragging about the latest vegan creation they created.

Local communities, governments and schools are getting into the mix too.

Health Food: Produce and Vegan Products Increase

Vegan food sold over $3.8 billion last year – America is starting to catch on.

Partnerships with brands and chefs like Beyond Meat, Gardein and more have been successful for partners to places like Carl’s Jr’s and others.

Urban gardens and centers have developed to provide more local produce to hard to reach areas.

Farmers markets and local community centers, all designed to help spread their message, share wisdom, and ultimately, provide a more prosperous and healthy community centered around food.

The conversation around food has officially changed – in addition to tasty options, we know are focused on well-being and nutrition as well.
