Of course it is.
Civility lays the foundation for people to feel comfortable to speak up and share ideas and information, thereby increasing our collective wisdom. Google, in its data-driven pursuit to determine what makes for high functioning teams, came to the conclusion that when employees experience “psychological safety,” whether in the face of admitting a mistakes, partnering or taking on a new roll, teams flourish. Benefits include higher revenue, employee loyalty and harnessing innovation from diverse ideas.
This civility stuff is contagious by the way and small acts can contribute to a cycle that fosters greater civility across your networks.
Sadly the opposite is also true. Research has also shown that the incivility can spread to bystanders, and being subjected to rudeness can drain us of creativity and our ability to perform.
Choose wisely.
Here’s to co-creating a wiser world.
